Gender and Education

EQUATE strengthens the capacity of USAID staff and stakeholders to institute gender-equitable practices and policies in basic education activities. Funded through USAID’s Office of Women in Development, EQUATE examines how the dynamics between and among males and females impact educational access, retention, quality, and achievement.

Fundamental to EQUATE’s approach to achieving gender equality in education is a focus on the participatory engagement of USAID staff, implementing partners, and stakeholders. Towards this end, this site is designed to encourage knowledge sharing and information exchange. By providing an opportunity for practitioners to share their resources and experiences, this community provides a forum for exploring how gender considerations are being incorporated into education programming. Community members are encouraged to post resources and provide feedback.

New Resource

Education from a Gender Equality Perspective” is designed to assist education programmers in better designing, managing, and evaluating education projects.  This paper presents a framework for addressing gender equality in education, focusing on four dimensions: access, the learning process, educational outcomes, and external results. The four dimensions of the framework provide planners with a systematic way of addressing the components necessary for ensuring a relevant, high quality education for all learners. The framework addresses key issues in education such as access, quality, continuity, achievement, and relevance. Sections on each of the four dimensions include concrete activities that can be implemented as part of an overall strategy to achieve gender equality in education. In addition to presenting the framework, the paper presents topics such as the relationship between education quality and gender equality and the distinction between parity and equity.
