What are discussion categories and discussion threads?
Online discussions on GLP contain categories and threads. Categories are the main topics of discussion. Each category usually contains several threads, which are a series of messages.

Members can either post (add) a new thread in a category or reply to a thread that another member has written.

What do the discussion tabs (“My Posts”/ “My Subscriptions”/ “Recent Posts”/ “Statistics”) do?
      • “My Posts” provides a list of all of the messages you have written within all the different threads. This feature is particularly useful for those who are active in posting threads and messages and want to        review all your comments in one place.
      • “My Subscriptions” provides a list of all the threads to which you are currently subscribed.
      • “Recent Posts” provides a list of all the messages that have been posted in recent days. This feature helps community members find the most recent activity in the discussion area.
      • “Statistics” provides a tally of all the activity within the different categories of a discussion board, including the number of categories, the number of posts, and the number of participants.

How do I post a new thread (message)?
You must be signed in to GLP to post a new thread (message).

1. Go to the online discussion.

2. Click on the name of the category to which you want to add a new thread (message).



3. Click "Post New Thread" near the top of the page.



4. In the resulting form, complete the “Subject”, “Body” and “Text Verification” sections.
      • The "Subject" is the name of your thread. The subject that you choose will help users understand and search for your discussion.
      • Write your message in the “Body” section.
      • If you see the “Text Verification” box toward the bottom of the page, type the text or numbers above it into this box. Text Verification is a security measure to validate legitimate users. The letters and        numbers are purposely made somewhat difficult to read, also as a security measure. If you have entered the text incorrectly, you will receive the message “You have entered invalid data. Please try again.        Text verification failed.” Please enter the text again.



5. Click on “Post New Thread” at the bottom of the form when you complete your message.

How do I edit a thread?
You must be signed in to GLP to edit a thread. Only the person who created the thread and the administrator can edit discussion threads.

If you have made any mistakes posting a thread, or if you want to update the information within your thread:

1. Click on the name of the category to which your thread belongs.



2. Find the thread that you want to edit and click “Actions” to the right of this thread. In the resulting menu, click “Edit”.



3. Edit the message and after you have completed your changes, click on the "Save" button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.

How do I delete a thread?
You must be signed in to GLP to delete your thread. Only the person who created the thread and the administrator can delete a thread. Remember that deleting a thread also permanently deletes all of the replies to that message.

1. Find the thread which you want to delete and click “Actions” to the right of this thread. In the resulting menu, click “Delete”.



2. You will be asked whether you want to delete this thread; click "OK".

How do I reply to a message in a thread?
You must be signed in to GLP to reply to a message.

1. Click on the name of the category, and then on the thread to which you want to reply. You will see a page containing the thread’s initial message and any replies to it. Each box contains a single post created by a member.

2. Click on "Reply" or "Reply with Quote" in the message to which you want to reply. “Reply with Quote” will include the original message as part of your post; “Reply” will not.



3. Complete the “Body” and “Text Verification” parts of the form. All the other parts of the form are optional.
     • The "Subject" section contains the subject of the message that you are replying to. You can change the Subject section.
     • Write your message in the “Body” section.
     • If you see the “Text Verification” box toward the bottom of the page, type the text or numbers above it into this box. Text Verification is a security measure to validate legitimate users. The letters and      numbers are purposely made somewhat difficult to read, also as a security measure. 4. When you complete your message, click the "Reply" button. Your message will be placed after the message to which you replied.

How do I edit my message in a thread?
You must be signed in to GLP to edit your message. Only the person who created the message can edit replies.

1. Click on the category to which your thread belongs and then on the thread where you posted your message. Find the message that you have posted.

2. To edit your reply, click on the Edit at the bottom of your message box.



3. Edit the message and click on the "Update" button to save your changes.

How do I delete my reply to a message in a thread?
You must be signed in to GLP to delete your reply. Only the person who created the message can delete replies. Remember that once you delete your message you cannot retrieve it.

1. Click on the category, then on the thread where you posted your message. Find the message that you have posted.

2. To delete your reply, click  Delete at the bottom of your message box.



3. You will be asked whether you want to delete your message; click "OK".

How do I subscribe to a category?
When you subscribe to a category, you will be notified by email when a new message has been posted or updated in the category. You must be signed in to GLP to subscribe to a category.

1. Find the category on the message board to which you want to subscribe.

2. Click “Actions” to the right of this category. In the resulting menu, click “Subscribe”.

How do I unsubscribe from a category?
You must be signed in to GLP to unsubscribe from a category.

1. Find the category from which you want to unsubscribe and click “Actions” to the right of this category. In the resulting menu, click “Unsubscribe”. You will no longer receive email notification of any new postings.

What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a way for people to keep up with their favorite web sites. With RSS, users automatically receive the latest content on a particular web site (such as news, blog entries, and messages) without having to visit it.

How can I use RSS on GLP?

1. Click “Actions” to the right of the category or thread which interests you. In the resulting menu, click “RSS”.



2. Choose the application you will use as a RSS reader (feed reader) and click on “Subscribe Now”.



3. Use your specific RSS reader to read and receive your new subscription. Your reader will update you with any new messages in the category or thread to which you are subscribed.
