UNESCO Makes 2008 Education Data AvailableBlog|by Melissa Beuoy on 09 November 2009 UNESCO’s Institute for Statistics recently released the first of three data sets of education indicators for 2008. This first release of 2008 data includes figures for primary education in approximately 70 countries, secondary education data for 57 countries, and tertiary education data for 34 countries. According to UNESCO, the number of primary teachers across the globe continues to increase in an effort to meet the Universal Primary Education goal by 2015. However, there is still great demand for more teachers as school access improves. Pupil-Teacher Ratios are another key indicator in examining the quality of education. UNESCO reports that the 2008 data demonstrates that the Pupil-Teacher Ratios are still relatively high in many countries, ranging from 93:1 pupils to teacher in Malawi, 68:1 pupils to teacher in Rwanda, and 49:1 pupils to teacher in Cambodia. Stay tuned for additional education data released in January 2010. To look at the new data first hand, visit UNESCO’s Institute for Statistics. |
