GLP Study Tour to Madrid

by Robert Schware on 20 January 2010

In partnership with USAID and AMIDEAST, the Global Learning Portal recently organized a Study Tour for Palestinian education stakeholders to Madrid, Spain to examine the role the EducaMadrid portal is playing in the education system there. Established by the Consejería de Educación de la Communidad de Madrid, and based on the same Liferay enterprise portal solution GLP uses, the EducaMadrid portal has been integrated into the education system for school and community outreach, professional development, and school physical capacity building within a public-private framework. It has been supported operationally by the Groupo Gesfor.

Participants in the study tour included representatives from the Palestinian Ministry of Education & Higher Education, the Palestine Education Initiative, the Palestine IT Association, AMIDEAST, and GLP. During their visit, participants were introduced to the development of an expandable network of schools using the web portal infrastructure that embraces a new approach to teaching and learning as well as resource sharing at participating schools. They learned how the daily work and experiences of teachers and students had been transferred to the virtual web world, and how the educational community of users of EducaMadrid have over a period of almost seven years, contributed to collaboration and content sharing.

The visit helped build a foundation for knowledge sharing amongst groups in Madrid, Spain, and the U.S. Check out press from the visit below:

Both the Consejería de Educación de la Communidad de Madrid and Grupo Gesfour expressed strong interest and willingness to further share and adapt the world class open source system to the requirements of the Palestinian educational system through a collaboration approach and partnership that builds on the benefits of a successful implementation.
