International Day of PeaceBlog|by Jodi Lis on 18 September 2009 For the International Day of Peace 2009, the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling on governments and citizens to focus on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation under the slogan 'WMD – We Must Disarm.' At a 24 Hour World Peace Celebration on the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) organizations and individuals will post pre-produced video presentations and stream video from all over the world to highlight their vitally important work for world peace. Educators can learn and teach their students about disarmament using these resources:The United Nations Cyberschoolbus Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education website has a Classroom Toolkit with engaging exercises regarding the complex issues associated with weapons of mass destruction. Time to Abolish War: A Youth Agenda for Peace and Justice by the Hague Appeal for Peace looks at building a culture of peace in the 21st Century through peace campaigns on issues including landmines, small arms, peace education, promoting children’s rights, stopping the use of child soldiers, abolishing nuclear weapons, and building an International Criminal Court. The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons offers the Disarmament Education Toolbox which has activities and lesson plans to teach classrooms about nuclear dangers and solutions, and a guide, Learn Abolition: How students can rid the world of nuclear weapons, by Tim Wright which lists activities that students can do to influence leaders’ views on nuclear weapons issues and encourage others to become active in the movement.
