World eBook Fair July 4 - August 4 "Own Your Own Library" is the theme of the 2008 World eBook Fair. The fair is created by contributions from 100+ eLibraries from around the world. The largest collections in the fair are: World Population Day: 11 July World Population Day brings awareness to population issues in the world. The United Nations Population Fund, (UNFPA), has resources and activities to promote World Population Day. Click here to find the population of capital cities and cities of 100,000 and more inhabitants. The World Bank's Development Education Program for students and teachers to explore social, economic, and environmental issues has a learning module on Population Growth Rate. World Refugee Day: 20 June This year, events around the world on World Refugee Day will focus on the fundamental need for protection. For some, this means economic security; for others, protection is freedom from violence and persecution. The UN Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is the lead UN agency that co-ordinates international action to protect refugee and safeguard their rights. UNHCR's Teaching about Refugees has lesson modules, educational resources and games. The UN CyberSchoolBus has a briefing paper for students to learn more about refugees. Day of the African Child: 16 June Right to Participation: Let Children be Seen and Heard Learn about the the rights of the African child: The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child is administered by African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. The Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is the body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. World Environment Day: 5 June World Environment Day organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) stimulates global awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. "Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy" is the 2008 theme. New Zealand, one of the first countries to pledge a carbon-neutral future, will be the main host of World Environment Day 2008. HIV AIDS in the Spotlight
HIV AIDS in the Spotlight 3-8 August 2008: XVII International AIDS Conference, Mexico City The theme for the XVII International AIDS Conference is Universal Action Now which emphasizes the need for continued urgency in the worldwide response to HIV/AIDS, and for action on the part of all stakeholders at the global, national, regional and local levels. In addition to the conference sessions, other programme activities include the the Global Village to intensify the involvement of community organizations, the Youth Programme to strengthen the participation of youth and the Cultural Programme to highlight the role of culture in response to HIV/AIDS. For teachers: • AVERT has online quizzes on several HIV/AIDS topics or teachers can design their own quiz with a choice of questions. • Education International with its partners, WHO (World Health Organisation) and EDC (Education Development Center), implements EFAIDS, a programme that combines the efforts of teachers' unions in advocating for Education For All (EFA) at national level with their commitment to HIV/AIDS prevention in schools locally. For education managers: • HIV/AIDS Impact on Education Clearinghouse, coordinated by the International Institute for Educational Planning/UNESCO, is a platform for sharing knowledge and information on the impact of HIV/AIDS on education. • Overviews of Practical Resources, produced by EDUCAIDS,the Global Initiative on Education and HIV & AIDS led by UNESCO, provides useful published resources on essential components of an education sector response to HIV and AIDS. For researchers: Visit GLP's resource section on HIV and AIDS, and ELDIS, a leading website on development policy, practice and research, who has a resource guide on HIV and AIDS.
• The XVII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2008), will be held in México City, México from 3-8 August 2008. The conference theme is "Universal Action Now."
• "Digital Opportunities for All: Preparing Students for 21st-Century Skills" is the theme of the 2008 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICTs in Education. Funded by the Kingdom of Bahrain, the US$50,000 prize is divided between two winners. This prize rewards activities that demonstrate best practice as well as creative use of ICTs to enhance learning, teaching and overall educational performance. The deadline for submissions is 31 August 2008.
